Situation
The Ethelred Estate where BPT is based is home to c.4,000 people – all of whom are within the 2nd & 3rd deciles for deprivation. 66% of children engaged in weekly activities at BPT are in the poorest 30% of the UK population. Poverty can have detrimental effects on childhood health & development as children lack access to the same sports, physical activity & community engagement opportunities as their better-off peers. Many households are also food insecure, particularly during school holidays.
Solution
BPT deliver 23 weekly accessible & inclusive sessions free-of-charge for children aged 8+, including football, basketball & fitness. Programmes are designed to help children stay healthy, active & happy through having fun with others. BPT also run holiday programmes year-round, including free lunches for participants. Through BPT activities & mentorship, children develop a positive attitude towards their own physical health whilst building confidence, resilience & emotional self-control.
