In May 2025, Sarah Ruggins will attempt to break the world record for the fastest return trip from the south to the north of the UK by bicycle (1,700 miles Lands end to John O’Groats, return). Sarah is fundraising for two refugee bike charities: The Bike Project and Bikes for Refugees (Scotland).

Situation
The isolation & socio-economic disadvantage experienced by refugees and people seeking asylum, many of whom are prohibited from working and survive on limited weekly allowances of as little as £8.86 for essentials like food, clothes and healthcare. Our innovative and proven model of reuse, refurbishing and donating bikes to refugees, is an environmental and green solution to transport poverty, giving bikes a second lease of life, providing essential mobility and freedom of movement to refugees.
Solution
Our charities Bikes for Refugees (Scotland) and The Bike Project are united in our mission to support refugees to access the transformative benefits of cycling. We do this through the repair/refurbishment of donated bicycles for free distribution to refugees and people seeking asylum, alongside essential cycling kits. We also provide ongoing support through cycling training programmes: Pedal Power and Bike Buddies, volunteering opportunities, training, and led group community cycle/skills rides.
