Situation
All 13 otter species in the world are included in the IUCN Red List with 12 declining. All face challenges eg habitat loss, hunting for skins and meat, pollution, conflict with man and young cubs suffer in the illegal pet trade. These challenges prevent population recovery. Some species have very limited data so IOSF has held a series of training workshops in Asia, Africa and South/Central America to train more researchers to work with local communities and gather vital data.
Solution
For WOD we reach out to supporters & those involved in research/education/conservation around the world encouraging them to raise awareness about otters and the problems they face. The event has gained momentum and in 2024 events were held in 48 different countries by groups and individuals, children & adults. 3 small grants are offered to encourage and support events. Fundraising supports educational & research projects around the world and workshops are held in different countries for training
