Coral reefs in Jangamo are under threat from overgrown macroalgae, which is suffocating the ecosystem and leading to declining coral coverage. Coral reefs are essential for marine biodiversity and provide critical food and financial security for local communities. Without intervention, this ecosystem collapse will worsen, impacting fish stocks, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Project BEAM addresses this issue by piloting macroalgae removal to enhance coral recovery and restore ecosystem balance.

Our team will scuba dive to remove macroalgae, clearing rock substrate for corals to colonise. We will monitor coral recruitment success, maintain cleared plots to prevent regrowth and encourage coral recruitment, and measure the algae removed to assess impact. This science-driven approach combines hands-on conservation with data collection to restore coral reefs.
