EHRA aims to conserve elephants through practical solutions to help people live with elephants peacefully and securly. Water is the main source of conflict, as elephants can damage waterpoints in their search for clean water. Our mobile water unit will enable immediate response to elephant damage.

Situation
Human-elephant conflicts (HEC) in Namibia’s northwest are the main cause of elephant mortalities. Droughts exacerbate HEC as the pressure on dwindling natural resources rises. In their search for food and water, elephants cause severe damages, financial strain, fear and frustration which often leads to the declaration and killing of ‘problem animals’. Today, the resident desert elephant population is lower than ever before. To secure elephant survival and human well-being, HEC must be mitigated.
Solution
Through 20 years of applying holistic HEC mitigation, we learnt that elephant survival is tightly linked to people’s tolerance towards them, which increases by addressing all elements challenging peaceful coexistence. Our work focuses on protecting water points with walls plus ensuring elephants can access water; a project that is in high demand. We plan to create a Mobile Water Unit dedicated to responding fast to water issues, plus increasing wall building activities, expanding our impact.
