We’re tackling forest fragmentation in Sumatra which is causing orangutan populations to become isolated. By protecting wildlife corridors and building canopy bridges in partnership with local communities, we can reconnect orangutans and enable them to thrive in the wild.

Situation
Sumatra's rainforests are increasingly fragmented, isolating orangutan populations and threatening their survival. Habitat loss disrupts biodiversity, prevents orangutans from finding food and mates, and increases human-wildlife conflict. Reconnecting these forest fragments is vital to protect orangutans and other wildlife.
Solution
SOS works with frontline partners, local authorities and forest-edge communities to protect critical wildlife corridors and restore connectivity where forests have been fragmented, keeping the landscape connected so orangutans can roam freely. By aligning conservation and community needs, we build a sustainable future for forests and orangutans. We are already working to protect two forest corridors, and this year we will expand our work to a third vital and vulnerable corridor.
