Ancient trees are beautiful, rare and irreplaceable; allies in the climate and biodiversity crises. One 400-year-oak hosts an ecosystem of creatures for which ten thousand 200-year-oaks are no use at all. Protecting our oldest trees protects precious soils and preserves vital human-tree connections.

Ancient and other veteran trees are irreplaceable so it’s vital to secure their long-term future. Our oldest trees are threatened by poor land management – root damage, soil compaction, pollution, harmful pruning and housing/infrastructure developments. People don't understand or recognise how precious and rare these trees are, and the diverse life they host and ancient trees don't have the same legal protection as buildings of the same age would have, consequently populations are dwindling.

ATF connects individuals across disciplines and empowers them to protect and care for ancient and other veteran trees, which are living monuments, globally important, rare and irreplaceable habitat. We influence policy/legislation and publish free technical ancient tree guidance and research on climate change. We train, mentor and support people to recognise, understand and care for ancient and other veteran trees as well as the flora, fauna and funga hosted by our oldest trees and their soil.
