We are campaigning for a twentyfold increase in community-owned renewable energy projects, which would save 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually whilst benefiting local people. To achieve this, we are amplifying the voices of people calling on their MPs to support new enabling legislation in Parliament.

Accelerating our transition to renewable energy is vital to tackling climate change. Community energy projects have huge potential to drive a transition that benefits local people. But the UK is far behind other countries, with such projects making up only 0.5% of electricity generation. Studies show there is massive potential for growth and that communities everywhere wish to build renewable infrastructure and supply clean energy locally. Outdated energy market rules stand in the way.

We have drafted legislation – the Local Electricity Bill – that would enable community energy projects, owned and run by local people, to sell their clean electricity locally. We are empowering people to advocate for legislative changes like this, in order to build majority support in Parliament. Our efforts have already led to a new £10 million Government Community Energy Fund to help get projects started. But for legislative change to happen, support from more MPs and the Government is needed.
