Over 90% of households in Malawi cook on open fires. This is inefficient and consumes large quantities of wood fuel. The result is significant deforestation identified as a critical issue. The Malawian National Charcoal Strategy identifies Zomba as an area that 'by 2030, there will not be enough biomass to meet demand'. Trees are also needed for shade, nutrition and soil improvement. This project provides very cost effective carbon mitigation.

Mbedza is solving this problem in two ways. The first is we build Esperanza Stoves and this reduces wood consumption by 60% compared to cooking on open fires. We follow this with woodlots that provide a sustainable source of wood supply and this is the purpose of this application. Tree saplings are raised from seed in our project nurseries - this provides village communities with a source of income. Each participating village will be given all appropriate training, equipment and tools.
