Situation
England is in 234th place (where 1st is optimal) in the global ranking of nature in 240 countries and territories. We’re losing wild creatures at an unprecedented rate – our beloved countryside is getting quieter and emptier with each year that passes. Not only are we depriving ourselves of the joy, wonder and healing that nature brings, but we are failing to protect our biggest ally in the fight against climate change.
Solution
Heal is the only national charity dedicated to buying land across England for rewilding and ensuring it is accessible to all. In 2023 we acquired an ecologically depleted farm in Somerset (460 acres/186ha) and we are rebuilding wildlife populations through rewilding. Crucially, our land is open and accessible – we have a specific focus on the lowlands because that’s where most of us live. We will continue to create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to benefit and support our work.
