We are planting a nature recovery corridor of hedgerow to connect the two National Parks in Hampshire - the South Downs and New Forest. We are half way through our project and have planted 7.5km of hedgerow with a volunteer force of 'Hedgerow Heroes'. We aim to finish in March 2026 .

Situation
Hedges are important landscape features as well as important for our wildlife and climate. We have lost half of our hedgerows since 1945 and we are losing the skills to manage them well. The Lawton Review states that the wild spaces in this country need to be bigger, better and more connected. Hedgerows have a superpower, they can connect up wild spaces, increasing the range of the species that live there, and they are a fantastic habitat for so much of our native wildlife such as hedgehogs.
Solution
Our Hampshire Hedge project aims to plant 15km of new hedges as well helping local communities and landowners develop the skills, expertise and confidence to improve their own hedgerows through hedgelaying training and local support. Will will recruit and train hundreds of Hedgerow Heroes through the duration of this 3 year project to ensure a lasting legacy of hedgerow activity throughout central Hampshire and help turn the tide on the decline of our important hedgerow habitats.
