Malta Environment Foundation was established in May 2023. MEF is dedicated to convening great minds, resources and ideas to support a shift towards environmental resilience in Malta. Given the scale of the climate and ecological emergency, our ambition is to expand and accelerate nature protection.

Situation
Overdevelopment, lack of enforcement of environmental laws, and pollution are the three areas that MEF has identified as the key problem areas that Malta faces. Less than 20% of waste is recycled and Malta has the lowest forest cover in the EU.
Solution
MEF's mission approach is threefold. 1. INNOVATIVE CONSERVATION SOLUTIONS - We view the environment as part of a larger, national system, and explore novel approaches to overcome challenges. 2. SPACE FOR NATURE TO THRIVE - We aim to protect and regenerate nature, and encourage its growth across the archipelago's natural and built-up spaces. 3. COMMUNITY AGENCY & ACTION - We are committed to empowering communities for a brighter future in Malta.
