Over the last 100 years, the UK has lost 90% of its wetland habitats, with more than 10% of freshwater and wetland species now at risk of extinction. Longdon and Eldersfield Marshes, once Worcestershire’s largest wetlands, supported iconic species like bitterns and swallowtail butterflies before being drained during the Victorian era. Although restoration has reclaimed some of this lost richness, habitat fragmentation continues to threaten the wildlife that rely on wetlands to survive.
Since 2001, we’ve been restoring 120 hectares of wetland habitat at Hill Court Farm. This land now supports diverse wildlife, including occasional visits from marsh harriers and common cranes. By purchasing this nearby wet grassland we are adding another piece in our long-term strategy to reconnect and restore the Longdon Marsh. This purchase will help reverse wetland loss and ensure these habitats continue to support the wildlife that depends on them.
