Providing transport is such an important part of Sheffield Young Carers package of support to the young people and families we work with as those bus, tram, or taxi rides can often be the difference between them being able to access our support or not.

Situation
Young carers provide unpaid care for family members who have chronic physical or mental illnesses, disabilities, and/or addiction. Young carers are often overlooked and feel excluded by the services that support their families, despite being experts and key partners in their care. Alarming evidence gathered by a 2023 All-Party Parliamentary Group inquiry showed that there are likely to be one million young carers in the UK and the time they spend caring can significantly impact on their wellbeing
Solution
Without the support that Sheffield Young Carers is able to offer to these young people, they would get no respite from their caring role, they wouldn’t have the opportunity to grow their support network with other young people in similar positions to themselves, they wouldn’t get to experience some of the “normality” that our organisation provides. To make sure that these young people are able to attend our support sessions, we provide transport to and from them, removing the barrier of cost.
