Situation
Families with children under 5 are housed in temporary Home Office hotel accommodation, isolated in rooms without space to play and meet one another. Manchester is a dispersal area for newly arrived families seeking sanctuary and it is difficult to integrate into a new city with limited financial means and confidence to access to support. Many have faced trauma and isolation negatively impacts their health and wellbeing. Parents and children lack peer support networks to build new relationships.
Solution
Families of the World sessions offer creative activities for children and their parents alongside access to support from Sure Start, baby clinics and health visitor drop-ins. Our programme counters isolation and promotes the health and wellbeing of asylum seekers and refugees by offering vital services in a welcoming, non-judgmental cultural setting. Families with similar experiences can meet each other, share lunch and make new connections to build confidence as new arrivals to Manchester.
