Situation
Craft skills are central to our cultural heritage and vital to our creative future, yet access to learning craft skills is falling as creative education languishes. The most sobering figure is the drop in Design & Technology GCSE entries from 270,000 in 2010 to 83,000 in 2021. Those who do choose a career in craft need careful support - whether in the fragile, start-up stages of their careers or as they look to take their practice to the next level.
Solution
We create opportunities for people of all backgrounds to discover and enjoy craft. Cockpit promotes craft careers and provides training and education to protect the future of craft skills, opening pathways into professional practice for more, and more diverse, people. In the face of declining opportunities for young people to discover and learn craft skills, we provide engaging workshops to start them on their journey, as well as working with partners to offer a rich community programme.
