The London Tree Ring will create a superhighway for nature around the capital. Better protected and new woodlands, nature friendly orchards, ornamental trees, hedgerows and other treescapes – will support nature’s recovery and help with climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Our climate is changing. London is increasingly vulnerable to overheating, heavy rainfall and resultant flooding and sewage overflows. Our contribution to climate change has life-threatening implications globally. Global populations of vertebrates have plunged by 73% between 1970 and 2020. The UK has suffered a massive decline in biodiversity over the past 50 years and is now one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth.

There is an urgent need in the face of both the climate and nature crises to better protect existing treescapes and create new ones. The Tree Ring presents the capital’s biggest opportunity for growing London’s urban forest. It will weave through a mosaic of other habitats creating a safe corridor for nature. To realise this vision we need a core team to drive forward the project and engage with environmental NGO partners, local authorities, landowners and local green space advocacy groups.
