We want to make Leicester Comedy Festival more inclusive for comedians and audiences. We will bring acts from underrepresented groups to the festival, covering their costs. A mixed bill show will feature these acts & take place in non-traditional venue, welcoming new audiences from across the city.

From surveys and discussions with our stakeholders, we know there’s a lack of diversity and representation both on and off stage. For a cultural festival taking place in Leicester, one of the most diverse cities in the UK, this is something that needs to be addressed urgently. We launched in 2024 a pilot version of this project, to support underrepresented minorities in the comedy industry, and we received a staggering number of applications, which demonstrated the need for this scheme.

This will help acts from underrepresented groups to perform at the festival. Representation on stage is a key element to increase diversity in audiences. This will help the local community feel more included in the festival activities and feel more confident to attend events. This will allow individuals affected by the cost of living crisis to enjoy activities that have positive effects on their wellbeing. It is an opportunity to encourage community cohesion and celebrate diversity in our city.
