The 2023 Ofsted report on Art & Design has stated a decline in both the quality & quantity of art education in schools. Contributing factors include non-specialist teachers given these roles, lack of accessible training, and school reluctance to invest in external support. Rising stress & isolation among teachers with heavy workloads, limited resources, & mounting pressures is beginning to manifest as poor teacher retention, anxiety & fatigue. Rural isolation also impacts on this.
SWITCHBOOK fosters collaboration between teachers, artists, & cultural venues, creating a supportive network to combat isolation & enhance well-being. Through year-long sketchbook exchanges, gallery visits, networking events, & skills sharing, it builds confidence & equips educators to deliver high-quality art education. By uplifting teachers, SWITCHBOOK strengthens the quality of art education. Artists become teachers & teachers become artists, creating a circular dialog through SWITCHBOOK.
