Situation
2022 research by Mencap found that 82% of learning disabled adults felt lonely due to rarely being able to leave their homes. 32% were struggling with mental health issues, including low mood and low self-esteem. Older people, including those with dementia often suffer loneliness and depression. It can be difficult for these people and their carers to find groups and activities that are accessible to them and where they are made to feel welcome.
Solution
Open Voices is a central strand of MfE’s health and wellbeing programme. It offers weekly singing sessions across Nottinghamshire targeted at these groups, Led by a professional music leader and accompanist, sessions use a regular 'song bank' of available music to provide familiarity. Friendly volunteers welcome participants, support group leaders and help with the refreshment break, during which there is time for socialising and rest.
