Since 2010 there has been a 70% drop in young people studying performing arts. SOLT/UK Theatres report issues recruiting key technical theatre skills; a problem exacerbated in Northumberland. This will worsen without young people entering the industry. It will affect demand, especially for locally produced theatre & increase its production costs. Given that theatre is known to have a positive impact fostering collective identity, supporting mental health & adding to national wealth, we must act

We will engage young people (YP) in our next major production, Josey. We will:-deliver sessions with the YP who have co-created Josey to show how their ideas have been built into the production; invite pupils to attend dress rehearsal & workshop on the creative process to understand how plays are built and to engage interest in creative careers; offer practical stage management/technical skills work experience for A Level student & offer a work shadow opportunity for a higher education student.
