We are working with community groups in different parts of Lewisham to plant 40+ street trees. The involvement of community groups ensures that we plant in places of local priority – on busy roads, near social housing, or in areas of high tree loss – and that trees are subsequently well cared for.

Situation
Many parts of Lewisham suffer from a lack of street trees. Residents and community groups, the very people who know their areas best, are eager for support to get trees planted in the places where they know they are needed most, including along busy roads, near social housing, and in areas with high levels of recent or historic tree loss. The absence of trees impoverishes the local environment and contributes to a variety of problems, from speeding traffic to unregulated urban temperatures.
Solution
Our solution is to plant trees! And to do so with maximum community participation! A high level of resident involvement has always been among our USPs, but when we work alongside Lewisham’s community groups then we are even more effective. Community groups have the local reach that ensures more than ever that planting takes place in the areas prioritised by residents and that residents are engaged in caring for trees once they are planted, making sure they survive and thrive in their new homes.
