In the last 3 years the number of children seeking sanctuary in the UK has tripled. Gloucester Culture Trust is supporting GAS Projects who will support & commission 3 artists to work with young refugees (16-30) to create artworks to help them find their feet in their new home & welcome others.

With growing causes for displacement, more young refugees arrive in Gloucester each year. Though services exist to assist with paperwork and language, resources are stretched, leaving many struggling to find community and belonging. After 18, support drops further, and without the right to work while claims are processed, they are left vulnerable to isolation, exploitation, and difficulty integrating.

By involving young refugees in the co-creation of an artwork for Gloucester, we offer them a safe space to connect, feel heard, and build a sense of belonging. Through workshops with international artist Joke Amusan, they will create a text-based window banner exploring themes of migration and welcome. Two additional Windows of Welcome will be co-created with the Refugee Week working group—comprising cultural and community organisations—and local creative group, Matson Makers.
