Land, environmental, and Indigenous defenders are critical in combating the climate crisis and protecting ecosystems. Their efforts to halt deforestation, pollution, and unethical practices save our planet. However, they face increasing violence: 196 defenders were killed in 2023, many in resource-rich areas. These defenders often work with limited resources, facing risks of imprisonment, smear campaigns, and deadly retaliation as they challenge corporate greed and corrupt governments.

PBI helps thousands of land, environmental, and Indigenous defenders. We stand alongside activists, with our volunteers providing ‘protective accompaniment’ to keep them alive. We work with activists to identify the tools they need to ensure their work thrives. By connecting defenders through regional and international networks, we amplify their impact. Our work ensures that defenders can continue advocating for human rights and the environment without fear of persecution.
