Kestrels are declining at an alarming rate in many parts of the UK. The reasons for their decline are unknown and understanding them is essential for successful conservation. This money will expand and accelerate our existing research and conservation work. Detailed information about Kestrel populations, where they nest, where they move across the landscape and how many chicks they raise, is vital for developing conservation solutions for them.

We will identify reasons for Kestrel population decline and steps to reduce and reverse this. Some of this information has never been collected in the UK before. By tracking nesting Kestrels in different areas to see where they go in the landscape, we can understand how changes in habitat affect breeding success. This will help us understand why they are declining, identify the positive habitat settings for them and benefit our growing landowner network that already works to help Kestrel numbers
