Situation
16 million Disabled people live in the UK. The average disabled household faces £975 a month in extra costs, with the cost of living crisis, we know it's harder than ever for Disabled people to afford activities that improve wellbeing. Disabled young people are at a higher risk of experiencing loneliness and isolation. Sense 2021 reported 7 in 10 experience loneliness "often" or "always" compared to 6% of the general population. Disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed in the UK.
Solution
Stopgap provide high quality inclusive dance and movement opportunities for young Disabled people across the South East of England. Sport and Recreation Alliance reported in 2023 Dance and movement demonstrate a wide array of benefits e.g. improving retention in activity of young people, and people living with disabilities." We need your support to keep the costs down for Disabled young people to receive the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of our work in order to thrive in their lives.
