Moorland moths are in decline, with species such as the Scarce Silver Y decreasing by 68% since the 1970s . It is critical that we understand why, before these species disappear. We need your help to raise £50,000 to support a PhD project that will carry out invaluable research in moorland habitats.

Situation
Since the 1970s distributions of moths in moorland habitats in Great Britain have undergone a significant decline. Moorland is a unique ecosystem, found in all four UK countries. However this habitat is facing multiple threats, from a shifting climate to changes in land management. And these threats are impacting the species that thrive there. It is vital that we conduct research to understand the reasons behind these declines and understand what we can do to protect and manage moorland habitats
Solution
Butterfly Conservation is a leader in butterfly and moth research and conservation. Together with Scotland’s Rural College we are co-funding a student to carry out a PhD, in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute. The PhD will examine multiple drivers of moorland moth declines and then use this information to test successful restoration techniques. The research will provide evidence-based advice for land managers and inform vital conservation projects in the future.
