Opera North Learning & Engagement provides outstanding opportunities for young people to experience classical music and the arts. The Young Musicians Studio programme empowers children in Year 6 and above to develop musical skills and creativity through instrumental lessons and ensemble practice.

Many children lose access to music tuition when they progress to secondary school. Financial, social and geographical barriers also prevent them from continuing learning their instrument outside of school, creating a clear divide between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those whose families can afford to pay for music tuition. Following our pilot programme, we know there’s demand for more children to participate in Young Musicians Studio.

Opera North created Young Musicians Studio (YMS) to provide more equitable access to high-quality classical music tuition. Full and partial bursaries are available, to ensure that no one is excluded from participating. YMS is not limited to the most gifted children. It’s designed for the most engaged and enthusiastic – to push their creativity, unlock their potential and explore possibilities. We want to expand provision to increase weekly participation from 40 to 100 children.
