Wildlife is in decline in Africa and globally. Keystone species like lions, giraffe and elephants must exist close to people who, like them, depend on natural resources. Born Free’s work aims for successful coexistence: thriving local people living alongside thriving wildlife populations.

Situation
Globally wildlife populations have plummeted a staggering 69% since 1970. Land use changes for food and expanding infrastructure is reducing and fragmenting habitats vital for animals. Climate change is impacting the availability of local resources. Growing human populations come into conflict with animals, as both people and wildlife seek to survive in our changing world. We must act now to give elephants, lions, rhino, giraffe, cheetah and many other incredible species a future.
Solution
Working with the communities who live with wildlife, we aim to reduce conflict with wild animals, protect wildlife habitats and support sustainable human/wildlife coexistence. Born Free will provide sustainable solutions that promote understanding and tolerance toward wildlife while protecting homesteads and livestock from predators. Measures include predator proof enclosures, beehive fences, anti-poaching patrols, rainwater collection and storage, and reducing wood use for cooking.
