We will create urban forests and a supporting sapling nursery in Kathmandu as part of our response to climate change and loss of biodiversity while improving the lives of city-dwellers. The project will be implemented by social enterprise Lily's Leaves that provides work to young deaf women.

In recent years Kathmandu has become a concrete jungle with rapid urbanisation likely to continue. Construction and road-building has been at the expense of trees and the city now has one of the worst air qualities in the world. Climate change is exacerbating the problem. People's physical health is suffering because of respiratory disease and mental health is also compromised through the lack of green spaces. Needless to say, biodiversity has also plummeted.
Since July 2023, Lily's Leaves has been working with the municipal authorities, the Department of Forestry, schools and community groups in transforming heavily polluted waste ground into small urban forests at three sites. Saplings have been planted using the rapid-growth Miyawaki Method that we have been pioneering the use of in Nepal. By extending this programme to incorporate a sapling nursery this would underpin the programme, save money and generate an income and work for young deaf women.
