Following the success of their pilot project, Rite To Grieve, Voicing Loss will see vocal charity SANSARA work with vulnerable beneficiaries at St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich and, through singing, breathing exercises and discussion, explore how music can uncover new ways of living with loss.

Situation
Voicing Loss helps individuals build an accessible creative toolkit for processing grief and loss, and is rooted in research highlighting ensemble singing’s ability to encourage relationships, build empathy and forge strong communities. SANSARA recognises that many arts-based initiatives aren’t suitable for families, loved ones, and staff who support people in hospice care and has devised a programme which puts these individuals at the centre of their work, offering them the opportunity to create, express and form meaningful connections.
Solution
With experience in delivering creative health projects, SANSARA has seen first-hand the emotional impact choral music can have on individuals who are processing loss. Through collaborating with SANSARA members via ensemble singing, breathing exercises and group discussion, SANSARA’s creative health work sees participants form meaningful peer-to-peer connections, increase in confidence to express emotion and develop new techniques to process complex feelings.
