African elephants face an extinction crisis, with a 20% decline in a decade due to poaching and habitat loss. South Sudan, once home to 100,000 elephants, can be a safe haven once again. Fauna & Flora urgently needs your support to expand protection efforts and help elephant populations recover.

South Sudan was once home to over 100,000 elephants in the 1970s, but fewer than 2,500 remain today - a catastrophic 97.5% decline driven by demand for ivory, and habitat loss. Decades of political turmoil and exploitation have left only fragile fragments of South Sudan's once-thriving wildlife holding on. The threat from poaching and habitat loss is immense, and left unchecked, could see elephants and other endangered wildlife vanish completely. This is their last chance for recovery.

Southern National Park, with its vast stretches of rich and diverse habitat, could become one of the most significant areas for wildlife conservation in the whole of Africa. We need to train and equip rangers to patrol in and around the national park to protect habitats and the precious wildlife that lives there, and deploy camera traps to survey wildlife. We need to reduce pressure on natural resources by involving communities in conservation and helping them meet their needs sustainably.
