Every time we turn on a light, we risk polluting the natural world. Curtains for Light Pollution is raising awareness of the importance of how a simple action, such as drawing curtains or lowering a blind, can help reduce light pollution and the impact it has on wildlife and nature.

Almost everyone in the UK cannot experience a natural night sky! Evidence of the impacts of light pollution on wildlife has grown and strengthened. New research shows that light pollution is getting worse- increasing by 10% every year. The attraction of insects to lights at night can have fatal consequences for the insects involved. Exhaustion, increased predation, and a disrupted ability to navigate are just some of the reasons why up to a third of insects attracted to lights die.

We are calling on everyone to help us nurture the night shift, making Curtains for Light Pollution, to support nocturnal wildlife such as moths and beetles going about their lives- pollinating, recycling nutrients etc. The nature of light pollution presents a unique solution. It is a form of pollution that can be solved with the flick of a switch, unlike plastics and pesticides. Once a light has been turned off, that pollution no longer exists – allowing our wildlife to survive and thrive.
