Our rivers face threats from pollution and habitat loss which are being exacerbated by climate change. This campaign seeks to fund a monitoring programme using citizen science and eDNA to investigate these, determine what, why and where and so by enable change for the better.

After rain, rivers often turn brown with soil, but the amount of sediment and other substances in the water impact wildlife survival. Understanding how this varies across the year and the Usk Catchment is crucial. Government monitoring, with just 1 minute a month at 20-30 sites, cannot capture this. This project will empower people to take ownership of their rivers, gather vital data to complete the data set, and provide the evidence needed for those who can act to deliver meaningful changes.

By empowering and supporting citizen scientists, analysing the data they collect alongside eDNA and the past 10 years of electrofishing results, we can use this information to guide the Wye and Usk Foundation’s (WUF) work with governments, farmers, and businesses. Data is key. It allows people who can do, to act in a way that delivers the change. Through the catchment market that WUF is developing we will have a powerful tool to do this.
