Situation
Millions of children are missing out on the joys and benefits of reading; our research shows that only 42% of children have a bedtime story. Disadvantaged and vulnerable children face the greatest barriers to reading. These children also face a range of other social and educational barriers, but evidence shows that the benefits of reading can empower them to fulfil their potential in life.
Solution
We unlock the benefits of reading for children – especially those living in poverty or from vulnerable backgrounds – by providing them with books and reading support resources. We focus on supporting families with young children because BookTrust’s own research has shown that the earlier a child experiences shared reading, the more likely they are to develop long-lasting reading habits. Big Give donations will enable BookTrust to increase our reach to more children who need help the most.
