Situation
Sparkhill and Allens Cross are in the 20% most deprived UK wards where, respectively, 59.3% and 29.8% of children live in poverty. These areas lack affordable outdoor education and green spaces. Sparkhill's 92% minority ethnic population, largely low-income, is underrepresented in environmental movements and we want to diversify the conversation. Fuel poverty affects 29.5% households in Sparkhill and 17.5% in Allens Cross, providing energy advice is essential to maintain warm and safe homes.
Solution
Our partner organisations, Springfield Project and Allens Cross Community Association, will be co-designing a sustainability action plan for their communities. This will include training volunteers to become sustainability champions, and increasing organisational capacity, leading to increased sustainability initiatives in each community. Communities will develop disused garden spaces, to grow and cook healthy meals; attend cycling tuition, children's forest school, and energy advice sessions.
