ELSH brings communities together through teaching English in Barnsley, South Yorkshire to help vulnerable migrants, refugees and asylum seekers to begin integrating and making connections with local communities.

Situation
Over the past 10 years, Barnsley has become a centre for receiving people seeking asylum and refuge; it also concentrates food and logistics businesses that provide precarious work to the native population and migrant workers. Barnsley's post-mining communities, although close knit and supportive, they sometimes can be reticent at welcoming outsiders; hence it is difficult to raise funds dedicated to support vulnerable migrants and people seeking sanctuary in the borough.
Solution
Through teaching English, ELSH's efforts go beyond the classroom by dismantling linguistic barriers and fostering the integration of vulnerable migrants, asylum seekers and refugees with local communities. By providing pathways to work experience, placements and training and by offering health and wellbeing activities we help people enhance their employability, foster community cohesion and mental wellness, forge connections, build common ground, and combat feelings of isolation.
