In low-income countries, drawing parallels with the Christmas story is still too easy. At the time of the Nativity, only the rich sought medical help in childbirth. Today in sub-Saharan Africa roughly 50% of mothers give birth without a midwife. Help us to provide safe childbirth in rural Africa.

Situation
Having a baby should be a time of great joy and hope. But every year across the world around 287,000 women, the majority in low-income countries, die in pregnancy and childbirth. That’s one mother dying every two minutes, 800 each day. The current higher cost of living and high fuel prices means women and families living in remote rural communities are finding it much harder to access care - due to an increase in the cost of transport to get to vital maternity care services.
Solution
Maternity Worldwide uses an integrated approach to address each of the community and health facility issues women face when trying to access safe childbirth and quality maternity care. This includes income generation activities, health and wellbeing promotion, skilled birth attendant training and the provision of equipment. We are currently prioritising activities to increase income generation to allow women and their babies to access the care they need.
