Situation
UKH was established in 2017 with a double mission, to rescue surplus food destined for landfill & distribute it to individuals in food poverty in the Chichester area. 7 years on, we have remained true to our mission, though our systems have become more targeted as we continue to learn & adapt to growing needs (we now serve 77 neighbourhoods classified as deprived by the CRDC). The Covid epidemic & the cost-of-living crisis have also greatly contributed to how and where we operate.
Solution
We now rescue food from a network of 116 growers, manufacturers, wholesalers & retailers, then distributed to individuals @ 16 weekly Community Food Hubs in West Sussex & Hampshire, to 167 local food groups (i.e. food banks & meal services), our school Grub Clubs as well as our Nourish Hub, which provides 1000 free meals a week to residents of West London. We have also developed a nutrition & cooking skills education programme which reaches schools, service users & community groups.
