2025 will see the 10 year anniversary of Ghost Fishing UK. In this milestone year, we want to increase the impact of what we do, by reaching more people and engaging them with the charity's work. To do this, we need funding to get ourselves to coastal areas that we have not removed ghost gear from.

Situation
The United Nations estimate that 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear is lost in the seas every year. This fishing gear continues to catch marine animals, which then become “bait” for more marine animals. The fishing gear is frequently made of plastic based materials and therefore can potentially continue to “ghost fish” for many hundreds of years, before probably breaking down into micro-plastics. This is harmful to wildlife, the ecosystem and our own health.
Solution
Ghost Fishing UK want to reduce harm to wildlife, protect fish stocks and contribute to a cleaner and kinder environment. Our team remove lost fishing gear from the seas. We teach SCUBA divers to remove these nets safely. Then we find innovative strategies to recycle them. Currently the UK has no facility to handle or recycle dirty old ghost nets. Our aim is to remove lost nets, and regenerate them into new products. We need to fund diving projects and develop better net processing in the UK.
