Girls in the rural communities in the Waterberg area of South Africa are highly disadvantaged for life due to limited access to secondary education as: Their poverty level means they can't purchase sanitary protection. Lack of sanitary protection means they miss a week of school each month which puts them on an unequal footing and unable to catch up. Period poverty is affecting all secondary school girls which impacts the whole community. Lack of sex education results in high teenage pregnancy

The Waterberg Trust funds a trained, full-time nursing sister to educate secondary schoolgirls across Waterberg schools. Sister Grace is the only school nurse in the entire region. She is overseen by local paediatrician Dr Peter Farrant who helps structure her training. She also conducts sex education and general hygiene and health care. In addition she distributes ‘Dignity Dreams’ washable sanitary protection to ensure that girls don't miss a weeks schooling each month due to period poverty.
