We are raising funds to continue and expand our community and education work in Croydon and south London. Focused on working in disadvantaged schools and under-served communities, this work widens access to orchestral music experiences for people who otherwise would be unable to participate or attend.

A parliamentary report argued music education “becomes the preserve only of those that can afford to access it outside the classroom”. Only 15% of state school children receive sustained music tuition, compared to 50% at independent schools, and not enough children in Croydon have access to music education. In Croydon and south London, schools have collectively lost over £800,00 in government funding aimed at poorer pupils. Global majority artists are under-represented in orchestral music.

We will continue to focus and deliver our work in areas, schools and communities facing deprivation or lack of opportunities. We will expand our Inspire programme in primary schools with training for teachers. We will expand our new GCSE Set Works programme for secondary schools and mentor students in Side-by-Side concert performances. We will collaborate with communities to develop new works for public performance.
