Situation
Cross River State has some of the highest rates of child witchcraft accusations in Africa, with countless children accused and abandoned to live on the streets. They are vulnerable to rape, trafficking, recruitment by gangs for a range of criminal activities and being kidnapped for their body parts to be used in rituals. The practice of accusing child witches is often driven by Pentecostal pastors. The 2023 Child Rights Law criminalises child witchcraft accusations but awareness of this is low.
Solution
We will work with brave and passionate Christian leaders who are prepared to speak out and challenge the belief in child witches publicly and during their sermons. We will build and equip a network of pastors to join our PACT campaign and amplify their voices, in order to advocate for the implementation of the Child Rights Law in the state. A variety of creative media will be used to promote greater understanding of the need to love and protect all children.
