Situation
Many children and young people across Surrey and its London borders are facing unprecedented difficulties following the Pandemic and cost of living crisis. Children have missed out on key stages of development due to missing school and social interaction, their mental health has been affected and high inflation has put financial strain on many families. Residential activity holidays, often organised by schools or youth groups, have been a casualty with fewer children able to attend and benefit.
Solution
Following a merger with another local charity, YMCA East Surrey has taken on the Old Pheasantry Centre which is located in fabulous countryside on the North Downs, close to London. With space to sleep 26, several communal areas and a kitchen, it is open to local youth groups and YMCA's own youth clubs, providing a space for outdoor activities, learning and personal development at an affordable price. It needs upgrading and improvements to accessibility for those with disabilities.
