Situation
Fluency and confidence in English is crucial for full participation in UK society and enables women to find work, make friends and access the everyday services that everyone needs. But it’s hard to access English classes and many women find themselves socially isolated. Demand for classes exceeds supply in Brent. Traditional college courses are often inaccessible due to lack of childcare, impose strict attendance requirements and have poor understanding of the trauma of war, flight and loss.
Solution
We will provide: -free women-only English classes at family wellbeing centres. The classes will focus on everyday situations, so women have the language skills to manage independently and confidently in their everyday lives. Each centre has a free creche -a monthly film club which exposes women, most of whom do not speak or hear English at home, to real-life conversations and slang -regular trips and creative workshops -regular wellbeing and therapeutic workshops -help with travel costs
