The Young Vic (YV) theatre is raising funds for its Taking Part Learning Programme, which brings the arts to education settings for children and young people aged 11+ in Lambeth and Southwark. Each year we engage over 2,500 children and young people from schools and education settings.

Lambeth and Southwark have 70+ secondary-aged mainstream schools, Alternative Provision, learning centres and FE/HE institutions. The data shows how arts access has declined in the curriculum since 2010. Many young people here have never been to the theatre before, and those excluded from mainstream education have even less arts access. 56 local neighbourhoods are in the 20% most deprived in England; 2 in 5 children grow up in poverty; and 1 in 5 local adolescents report mental health problems.

We increase access to the arts in education by working in local Alternative Provision settings through long-term, in-depth engagement with partners such as Southwark College, Southwark Inclusive Learning Service, and Lansdowne School (SEND), offering workshops such as creative writing, spoken word, poetry and acting. With Southwark College we offer a supported internship to one neurodivergent young person aged 18-25. We also give 2.5k free theatre tickets to local young people aged 16-25.
