Preparation for life in the UK is one of our key strands of activity, of benefit both to refugees and to the host communities alike. We help those seeking to make their home in Leicester understand our city, how they can thrive, work and contribute to the good of the whole community.

Situation
When asylum seekers arrive in our city, often from terrible experiences, they are often adrift and without knowledge of how to make a new life in the UK. We help them with the presenting issues of language skills, health, education and employability. In turn this helps the receiving community receive them as welcome contributors to the wider good, and challenges narratives seek to exclude or resent their presence and so add to social division.
Solution
We offer language classes, from beginner to more fluent; orientation around our city to get to know and enjoy what the area has to give; employability workshops and volunteering opportunities readying them for work when that becomes possible; advice on mundane but crucial areas such as housing options, managing money, energy saving and fire safety. We do all this through our small staff team, a group of committed volunteers and external partners.
