Situation
Bats are a vital part of our natural world, but they are highly sensitive to changes in the environment and reproduce slowly (most bat species only have one baby bat per year), so their recovery is slow. Finding a bat in need of help is a unique experience. For many people, it will be the first time they come close to one of these fascinating creatures. The National Bat Helpline provides a vital emergency service to callers, saving thousands of bats and their roosts every year.
Solution
The National Bat Helpline provides support to anyone encountering bats. We train hundreds of volunteer bat care call handlers each year, we then work with these volunteers in helping anyone who contacts the helpline for help. The advice provided often involves letting people know what to do if they find a grounded, injured or orphaned bat. We know that through the work of the helpline, many people become aware of how fascinating and important bats are as part of our natural heritage.
