Situation
Studies have shown that hospitalization negatively affects patients' well-being and demonstrably increases feelings of depression and anxiety. In 2023, the University of Oxford in collaboration with Oxford Health Arts Partnership found that ‘arts interventions were highly effective in improving mood of the patients’. Our hospital scheme addresses these issues, allowing patients to explore a wide range of musical genres, meet with our professional musicians, and engage in musical activities.
Solution
Hospital and care facility visits form a vital part of the Orchestra’s Education & Community programme, allowing some of the most vulnerable members of our community to hear and play music, to meet OPO musicians, and to socialise with other people through the medium of collaborative music-making. Our hospitals programme provides an opportunity for patients at accredited NHS facilities in Oxfordshire to attend a series of intensive, immersive workshops, where they will sing, play and collaborate.
