Transforming our overgrown and disused garden will create a safe haven for our residents to learn skills, craft, grow food and socialise. We will inspire our young people to co-create and look after the green space, that will become thriving habitat for people and nature into the future.

Situation
YMCA Leicestershire is home to 109 young people, aged 16 – 25, who have experienced homelessness or family breakdown. Many have grown up in poverty or faced poor mental health (36% of residents), whilst almost half are not in education or employment. Time in nature is known to boost mental, social and physical wellbeing, crucial for building self-esteem. The lack of a suitable outdoor space at our supported housing contributes to feelings of isolation and disconnection from nature.
Solution
The overgrown and unused green space at our Aylestone site will be transformed into a unique and much needed garden for young residents in our supported housing. Designed to sooth the senses, the garden will offer a quiet place for personal reflection and/or support work. Other areas will engage and lift the senses, delivering sessions to young people to spark creativity, inspire activity and interaction with nature.
